I’ve watched all the How-To guides about the new Evolve but I can’t find a solution for my problem. In the first video, Helen talks about the Label option in the Global Settings.
However, when I change it to German (de), it doesn’t save. So I thought maybe I needed to choose the language in the course settings instead. But there’s only a note saying: “Label translations are managed in your Account Settings.”
When I click on Account Settings, it just takes me back to the Global Settings.
What exactly do you mean when you say “when you have a new course in the instance in German”?
Does Evolve automatically recognize which language I’m using?
If that’s the case, it doesn’t seem to work.
Did you go through the translation process (export xliff in choice of language, trabslate and bring it back in) to create that course, or did you just create it from scratch as a German course? If the latter, Evolve will not know that it is supposed to present the German labels. You must create the English course, then go via the translation process so that the Language switcher appears in Live Preview and then choose German in order to see the translated interface:
I’m not sure which translation process you’re referring to — is there a tutorial for that?
Here’s what I’ve already tried:
In the Global Settings, I selected German (de) and then clicked the three dots => Export XLIFF (screenshot_1).
After that, I went into my course => Course Settings => Translations, and tried to import the XLIFF file via Add Translation (which didn’t make much sense to me, since I thought that section was meant for course translations) (screenshot_2).
When I tried to import the XLIFF file, an error message appeared saying:
“XLIFF does not belong to the course.”
Hi @LoarsWoars it would probably help you to know that in new Evolve it’s currently only possible to create courses in English then localise them into another language using XLIFF export/import (see Course Settings > Translations).
I totally appreciate that if you want to do something like create a course in German this is far from ideal - but since the vast majority of our customers start with English then use a translation service to localise that course into other languages that’s the path we chose to prioritise for the initial release - but that’s certainly not going to be the end of the story when it comes to localisation!
I am guessing that from your point of view, what might be more useful is to be able to set the language of a course when creating it so that it a) picks up the correct label set and b) becomes the ‘source’ language for any localisation via XLIFF
If so I’d definitely recommend submitting that as a feature request, along with any other suggestions/improvements you’d like to see on the localisation front.
Global Settings > Labels is where you modify the global strings and ARIA labels. You don’t actually need to use the XLIFF export/import functionality here, you can just select ‘+ CUSTOM LABEL SET’ then change the values directly.
These labels are then applied to each course automatically based on the course language.
So, as things stand, you would create a course in English, export an XLIFF file from Course Settings > Translations, translate it, then import it back in from Course Settings > Translations via this menu:
I hope I’ve understood this correctly:
Every course we create in the new Evolve is (in the background) created in English.
This means that Evolve automatically selects the English label set EVERY TIME I create a new course.
As a result, all buttons, multiple-choice feedback messages, etc., are always in English — even when the course content itself is in German.
But that would also mean, that every supported Label Set* will not work since every course is automatically in english.
So, as things stand, you would create a course in English, export an XLIFF file from Course Settings > Translations, translate it, then import it back in from Course Settings > Translations via this menu:
That sounds quite complicated.
In Evolve Legacy, it used to be possible to set the labels once in the Course Settings, and those labels would then automatically apply to all components.
This no longer seems to be the case in the new version.
That would perfectly match our requirements.
*German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Turkish
It is still the case, it’s just that in new Evolve the labels are set globally and per-language rather than on a per-course basis.
It is the process that the majority of our customers use though. Totally appreciate that it doesn’t work well if you want start off with a course in a language other than English - or do manual translations - but as I said this is just the initial release of the product and something I’m sure we will definitely be looking to improve based on user feedback.
